Android app
Loomkeep has an Android app. It shows the same Loomkeep as the website, so new features reach it as soon as they reach the site, and adds what a web app can’t do:
- Notifications from Android itself, sorted into channels (episodes, messages…) you can tune in Android’s settings.
- Scanner: a book’s barcode or a friend’s profile QR code, straight from the camera.
- Share to Loomkeep: share a link from IMDb, Letterboxd or your browser, and Loomkeep opens the work.
- Links and shortcuts: links from Loomkeep’s emails open in the app, and a long press on its icon jumps to search, the calendar or your stats.
- Home-screen widgets: what to watch next, and what comes out today.
It isn’t on Google Play yet: you install it from GitHub.
Install
Section titled “Install”- On your phone, download loomkeep-android.apk, the latest release.
- Open it. The first time, Android asks you to allow installs from your browser or file manager: allow it, then go back.
- Tap Install, open Loomkeep and sign in.
The app needs Android 7.0 or later and an up-to-date Android System WebView (from Google Play); with an older one, it says so and links to the update.
Keep it up to date
Section titled “Keep it up to date”Most changes need nothing from you: the app loads Loomkeep from the server, like the website. A new version of the app itself only comes out when its Android side changes.
Android doesn’t update apps installed outside Google Play on its own.
Obtainium does it for you: add
https://github.com/Logan2234/loomkeep as an app, and it installs each new
release over the previous one, keeping you signed in. You can also download
the new APK from the link above and install it over the old one.
Widgets
Section titled “Widgets”Long-press an empty spot of your home screen, pick Widgets, then Loomkeep:
- To watch: your shows in progress and their next episode. The ✓ marks it watched without opening the app; tap a show to open it.
- Releases: what comes out today among what you follow, else what comes out next.
- Chrono: times a gaming or reading session. Start it on a recent game or book, pause it, stop it: a game’s session is saved at once, and a book opens its page so you can enter the pages you read.
- Streak and level: your days in a row, your level, the week and your latest XP. It needs gamification on the instance.
- Search: search, scan a barcode, jump to a category, and find what you added lately.
Each one grows with its size, from a single show or release at 2 × 2 up to nine at 5 × 5. They show posters by default; long-press a widget, then its settings, to switch it to a list of cinema tickets. They refresh every half hour, and as soon as you leave the app. Signing out of the app signs them out too.
Your own instance
Section titled “Your own instance”The app opens loomkeep.app by default. To use a self-hosted instance, tap Use another instance under the sign-in form, and enter its address (it must use https). The same screen takes you back to loomkeep.app, and the page shown when Loomkeep can’t load offers it too.
On another instance, two things don’t work yet:
- Push notifications: the app’s notifications go through loomkeep.app’s keys, which another instance doesn’t have. Alerts still come by email, and the installed web app can get push notifications if the instance has them set up.
- Links from emails open in the browser rather than in the app.
